Poland Expands Mental Health Support for University Students

Bianca Lang · 2 September 2026

The Polish Ministry of Education and Science announced an expansion of mental health support for university students nationwide. The initiative allocates additional funding and resources to address rising demand for psychological services on campuses.

New Programs and Funding Allocations

Under the expanded framework, the ministry will distribute 60 million PLN over three years to establish counseling centers at 25 public universities. Each center will employ licensed psychologists and psychiatrists offering free individual and group sessions. A 24-hour national helpline staffed by trained operators will also launch next month. University staff will receive mandatory training on recognizing signs of anxiety and depression among students. The ministry cited recent surveys showing that 35 percent of students report symptoms of mental distress, with many citing academic pressure and financial concerns as primary factors.

Online platforms will provide self-help modules and virtual appointments to improve accessibility for students in smaller cities. Partnerships with private clinics will allow referrals when on-campus capacity is exceeded. Officials emphasized that participation remains voluntary and all records stay confidential under existing data protection laws.

Expected Outcomes and Implementation Timeline

Ministry representatives project that the measures will reduce wait times for initial consultations from eight weeks to under two weeks within the first year. Pilot programs at three universities already demonstrated a 22 percent increase in students seeking help after awareness campaigns. Full rollout is scheduled to begin in the upcoming academic semester, with progress reports published every six months. Regional coordinators will monitor usage data and adjust resources based on demand patterns. The ministry encourages students to utilize both in-person and digital options as they become available.
